Two Chinese crew members rescued after the Panama-flagged bulk carrier MV Ocean Winner sank in the Bay of Bengal have been safely brought to Paradip in Odisha, officials said on Thursday.
The two survivors, identified as Pan Tonglai and Chen Jianhe, were brought ashore by the Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Varad after being rescued from a liferaft on August 22.
According to Indian Coast Guard spokesperson Commandant Amit Uniyal, both survivors received medical attention onboard the Coast Guard vessel during the journey to Paradip. They were later handed over to authorised representatives of the shipping company in the presence of Bureau of Immigration officials and local police.
Vessel Was Bound for China
The MV Ocean Winner had departed from Paradip on August 20 carrying iron ore bound for China. The vessel had 24 crew members on board, including 20 Chinese nationals, three Myanmar nationals and one Bangladeshi national.
The sinking triggered a rescue response in the Bay of Bengal, with Indian authorities involved in efforts to locate and assist members of the crew.
The safe return of the two Chinese survivors to Paradip marks an important development in the ongoing response to the maritime incident. Authorities and the shipping company are expected to continue coordinating on the situation involving the vessel and its crew.
