Rupee Gains 11 Paise to 95.17 Against US Dollar After Fed Decision

October 29, 2026

The Indian rupee strengthened by 11 paise to 95.17 against the US dollar in early trade on Thursday, October 29, 2026, as the US currency weakened slightly following the Federal Reserve’s latest monetary policy announcement.

According to the supplied Press Trust of India (PTI) report, the rupee opened at 95.20 against the dollar before moving to 95.17. The gain came despite elevated crude oil prices, which remain an important factor influencing India’s external payments and currency market.

Federal Reserve Holds Interest Rates Steady

The US Federal Reserve kept its benchmark interest rates unchanged at 3.75%–4.00%, in line with market expectations, the report said. However, foreign exchange traders indicated that the market response to the announcement was mildly negative for the dollar, offering some support to the Indian currency.

Interest rate decisions in the United States can influence global capital flows because investors assess returns on dollar-denominated assets against opportunities in other markets. Changes in expectations about future US monetary policy can also affect the dollar’s movement against emerging-market currencies.

The rupee’s early appreciation reflected this softer dollar sentiment, although exchange rates can change during the trading session as investors respond to fresh economic signals and market activity.

Crude Oil Prices Remain a Key Risk

Elevated crude oil prices continued to be a concern for the rupee. India imports a substantial share of its crude oil requirements, so higher international prices can increase demand for foreign currency to pay for energy imports.

A sustained rise in oil prices may put pressure on India’s import bill and current account balance. These factors can influence currency-market sentiment, particularly when combined with changes in global interest rates and international investment flows.

For companies involved in international trade, currency movements can affect the cost of imports, overseas receipts and the value of cross-border transactions. Businesses handling international payments may benefit from reviewing their exposure to exchange-rate fluctuations and planning transactions carefully. Services related to cross-border payments can be relevant for businesses managing international money transfers.

Currency Movement Remains Sensitive to Global Signals

The rupee’s 11-paise rise in early trade marked a modest recovery against the dollar following the Fed announcement. However, the early movement alone does not establish a sustained trend for the currency.

Market participants will continue to monitor the dollar’s direction, crude oil prices, foreign investment flows and broader economic developments for clues about the rupee’s trajectory. The currency may remain sensitive to changing expectations around US monetary policy and India’s external financing requirements.
