A team of researchers has discovered a new genus and species of tiger moth from Kerala’s Idukki district, adding another important entry to the biodiversity records of the southern Western Ghats.

The newly identified species has been named Antaram idukki.

It belongs to the tiger moth subfamily Arctiinae under the family Erebidae.

Discovery Published in International Journal

The discovery has been published in the peer-reviewed Journal of the Lepidopterists’ Society.

Researchers say the species is currently known only from Idukki, making the finding significant for regional biodiversity documentation.

Why Antaram idukki Matters

The discovery highlights the rich but still underexplored insect diversity of the Western Ghats.

Scientists say new species discoveries are important because they help researchers understand ecosystem health, evolutionary history and habitat importance.

The presence of such species also strengthens the case for protecting biodiversity-rich landscapes.

Western Ghats Remain a Biodiversity Treasure

The Western Ghats are recognised as one of the world’s major biodiversity hotspots.

Kerala’s Idukki district, with its forests, highlands and unique ecological zones, continues to reveal previously undocumented species.

Researchers believe many more insects, plants and smaller organisms may still remain unknown to science.

Conservation Message

Experts say the discovery of Antaram idukki underscores the need to conserve fragile habitats in the Western Ghats.

Habitat loss, climate change, land-use pressure and fragmentation continue to threaten many species, including those that have only recently been discovered.

The discovery of Antaram idukki is a reminder that biodiversity protection is not only about large animals or forests, but also about smaller species that play vital ecological roles.

Protecting the Western Ghats means protecting thousands of life forms that continue to shape India’s natural heritage.
