Nepali authorities imposed an indefinite curfew in parts of Saptari district, along the border with India, on Friday, after protests broke out in response to communal violence that had erupted earlier in neighbouring Sunsari district.
The District Administration Office enforced the curfew in parts of Rajbiraj municipality starting 8 a.m., describing it as a precautionary step after groups gathered to protest over the weekend's clashes. The move comes as tensions continue to simmer across several districts in the region, prompting authorities elsewhere to impose their own curfews and prohibitory orders in recent days.
Security deployment has been stepped up across the affected areas, with members of the Nepal Army working alongside Nepal Police to maintain order as protests continue in some locations, including Siraha, where forces have been seen standing guard following clashes between two communities.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely, with the priority being to prevent further escalation while restoring calm in the districts affected since the unrest began over the weekend.
