Petitioners in the NEET-UG protest case have urged Chief Justice of India Surya Kant to re-constitute the high-powered enquiry committee (HPEC) examining the police action against students who were protesting alleged paper leaks.
The plea was made before the Chief Justice on Tuesday, with the petitioners arguing that the existing committee may not have sufficient capacity to examine the alleged involvement of individuals and authorities at the highest levels of government.
The HPEC, chaired by former Supreme Court judge R. Subhash Reddy, was constituted to look into issues surrounding the police crackdown on students during protests linked to alleged NEET-UG paper leaks on July 20.
Petitioners Clarify Their Position
In their application, the petitioners specifically clarified that their request was not intended to question the personal integrity of any member of the existing committee.
Instead, they argued that the scope and composition of the enquiry needed to be capable of examining the alleged role of people occupying senior positions within the Union Executive, Ministry of Home Affairs, Delhi Police and the Rapid Action Force.
The petitioners have therefore sought a re-constitution of the HPEC, describing the existing arrangement as potentially "under-equipped" for the nature and scope of the issues that they want investigated.
The matter comes amid continued legal and public scrutiny surrounding the handling of protests connected with the NEET-UG examination and allegations concerning the examination process.
Any decision on the petitioners' request will determine whether the current enquiry framework is modified or expanded to address the concerns raised before the Supreme Court.
