Kerala has been placed on heightened alert after a 43-year-old man from Farook in Kozhikode tested positive for the Nipah virus, prompting health authorities to launch emergency containment measures.
The patient, who had developed symptoms similar to Nipah infection, has been shifted to the isolation ward at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. His infection was detected through tests conducted at the Medical College laboratory, after which he was moved to a special isolation facility around midnight.
Samples have also been sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for final confirmation.
Patient Suspected to Have Been Exposed During Cleaning Work
According to health officials, the patient worked in cleaning old buildings and is suspected to have contracted the virus while carrying out work at a structure in Farook that had a heavy bat presence.
Health experts believe exposure to bat droppings or contaminated material may have led to the infection.
Nipah is a zoonotic infection that can spread from animals such as bats to humans. The virus can cause severe fever, breathing difficulty, vomiting, neurological complications and brain inflammation.
Contact Tracing Begins After Delay in Diagnosis

Relatives reportedly believed the symptoms were linked to alcohol withdrawal, as he was a regular drinker. He was then admitted to a de-addiction centre, where he stayed for several days before his condition worsened and he was shifted to a major private hospital.
During this period, he is believed to have interacted with several people, including inmates and staff at the centre, increasing the potential contact list.
Restrictions Imposed at Kozhikode Medical College
Kozhikode Medical College has imposed tight restrictions around the isolation ward as part of infection control measures.
Entry to the SDS block has been completely stopped. Barricades have been installed, and parking facilities near the area have been suspended to prevent unnecessary movement around the isolation zone.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation while awaiting the final confirmation report from Pune.
