Indian Rupee Rises 91 Paise to ₹95.80 Against US Dollar After RBI Measures

October 12, 2026

Mumbai, October 12, 2026: The Indian rupee strengthened sharply in early trading on Monday, gaining 91 paise to reach ₹95.80 against the US dollar after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced measures aimed at reducing volatility in the foreign exchange market.

The recovery followed a period of pressure on the domestic currency, with elevated crude oil prices and a strong US dollar weighing on market sentiment.

According to a Press Trust of India (PTI) report published by The Hindu, the RBI announced several measures on Saturday, October 10, to manage demand for dollars and curb speculative activity in the currency market.

RBI Introduces Measures to Ease Dollar Demand

Among the steps announced was a dedicated dollar window for oil marketing companies through designated banks. The measure is intended to help meet the foreign currency requirements of these companies while reducing their direct demand for dollars in the spot market.

The RBI also increased the costs associated with certain foreign exchange hedging transactions, according to the report. Such measures can influence how market participants manage currency exposure and speculative positions.

The central bank’s actions come against a challenging external backdrop, particularly for an economy that imports a substantial share of its crude oil requirements.

Why Crude Oil Prices Matter for the Rupee

India’s dependence on imported crude oil makes international energy prices an important factor in the country’s foreign exchange market.

When oil prices rise, Indian importers generally need more dollars to pay overseas suppliers, all else being equal. Higher demand for foreign currency can place pressure on the rupee.

A stronger US dollar can add to that pressure, particularly when global investors favour dollar-denominated assets.

Measures that help manage dollar demand may ease some immediate pressure on the domestic currency. However, the rupee’s broader direction also depends on oil prices, international capital flows, trade conditions and global monetary policy.

How RBI Intervention Can Influence Currency Markets

Central banks can use a range of measures to manage excessive volatility in foreign exchange markets. These may include adjusting access to foreign currency, changing rules affecting market participants or intervening through authorised channels.

The measures reported on October 10 were intended to address pressures in the dollar market. The rupee’s early-session appreciation on Monday followed the announcement, although exchange rates are influenced by several factors and the move cannot be attributed to a single measure with certainty.

A stronger rupee can reduce the domestic-currency cost of imports when other factors remain unchanged. It may therefore help importers, including businesses purchasing goods or raw materials priced in dollars.

Currency movements can also affect exporters, overseas remittances and companies with foreign-currency liabilities, with the impact varying according to their individual exposure.

What the Rupee’s Recovery Means for Businesses

For Indian businesses that depend on imported fuel, machinery or other dollar-priced inputs, exchange-rate movements can influence procurement costs and financial planning.

Importers may benefit from a stronger rupee, while exporters converting dollar earnings into rupees may receive fewer rupees for the same amount of foreign currency.

Businesses with international operations can manage some of these uncertainties through appropriate budgeting, cash-flow planning and authorised currency-risk management practices.

The impact on any particular company depends on its pricing arrangements, import and export exposure, payment schedules and existing hedging positions.

Outlook: External Factors Remain Important

The rupee’s rise to ₹95.80 against the dollar represents a significant early-trading recovery, as reported by PTI. Whether the currency sustains those gains will depend on market conditions in the days ahead.

Crude oil prices, dollar strength, capital flows and demand for foreign currency will remain important factors. The effectiveness of the RBI’s measures will also depend on how banks, oil marketing companies and other market participants respond.

For now, the central bank’s latest steps signal an effort to manage currency-market volatility while addressing demand for dollars.
