Coal India Production Rises 9.2% in September as Supplies Grow

October 3, 2026

Coal India reported a strong increase in both coal production and dispatches during September, with the company indicating that output could improve further as the monsoon season comes to an end.

The state-owned coal producer recorded 53.5 million tonnes (MT) of production in September, representing a 9.2% increase compared with the same month last year.

Coal supplies also registered a significant rise, increasing 12.5% year-on-year to 61.2 MT during the month.

Power Sector Remains the Largest Consumer

The power sector continued to account for the largest share of Coal India's supplies.

Dispatches to power-generation companies increased 10.6% year-on-year to 48.9 MT in September. The increase comes at a time when reliable fuel availability remains important for maintaining electricity generation across the country.

Coal India's performance in this segment is closely watched because power plants depend heavily on domestic coal supplies for meeting generation requirements.

Non-Regulated Sector Supplies Also Increase

Coal supplies to the non-regulated sector recorded an even stronger increase during September.

Dispatches to this segment rose 19.4% year-on-year, indicating broader growth in coal movement beyond the power sector.

The non-regulated category includes industries and consumers outside the regulated power-supply framework, making its performance an important part of overall coal demand.

Monsoon Impact and Production Outlook

Coal production and transportation can face seasonal challenges during the monsoon because heavy rainfall can affect mining operations, logistics and movement of coal.

Coal India expects production to gain further momentum as the monsoon period ends and operating conditions improve.

The expected improvement could support higher availability of domestic coal in the coming months, provided mining and transportation operations continue to perform efficiently.

Why Coal India’s Numbers Matter

Coal remains an important component of India's energy system, particularly for electricity generation and several industrial activities.

Changes in production and dispatch volumes can therefore have implications for power generation, industrial operations, transportation requirements and broader energy supply conditions.

For companies operating across energy-intensive sectors, effective Business Advisory can help businesses assess financial and operational considerations arising from changing market conditions.

September Performance at a Glance

  • Coal production: 53.5 MT
  • Year-on-year production growth: 9.2%
  • Total coal supplies: 61.2 MT
  • Year-on-year supply growth: 12.5%
  • Power-sector supplies: 48.9 MT
  • Power-sector growth: 10.6%
  • Non-regulated sector supply growth: 19.4%

With the monsoon season nearing its end, Coal India's expectation of stronger production in the coming period will be closely watched by the power sector and other major coal-consuming industries.
