The Cyber Crime Branch of the Bhopal Police has launched separate investigations into three cyber fraud cases after residents of the city collectively lost more than ₹5.60 lakh in different online scams over a span of two days.

The cases demonstrate how cybercriminals continue to adopt diverse methods—including fake electricity bill notifications, fraudulent work-from-home opportunities and spoofed banking calls—to target unsuspecting individuals through psychological manipulation and digital deception.

Fake Electricity Bill Alert Costs Resident ₹1.45 Lakh

According to police, the first incident involved a resident of Arera Colony who received a phone call from a person claiming to represent the state electricity department.

The caller warned that the consumer's electricity connection would be disconnected immediately unless an alleged outstanding bill was paid without delay. The victim was then directed to click on a link shared during the conversation.

Soon after following the instructions, unauthorized transactions were allegedly carried out from the victim's bank account, resulting in a loss of ₹1.45 lakh.

Online Part-Time Job Scam Leads to ₹3.20 Lakh Loss

In another case, an executive working in MP Nagar reportedly came across an online advertisement promoting a lucrative part-time work opportunity involving product reviews.

Initially, the platform appeared genuine and even offered small returns to build confidence. However, the victim was later persuaded to make repeated cryptocurrency deposits in order to unlock higher commissions and larger earnings.

After investing ₹3.20 lakh through multiple transactions, the platform allegedly blocked her account, cutting off all communication and making the promised returns inaccessible.

Fake KYC Verification Results in ₹95,000 Fraud

The third complaint was filed by a retired government employee from Misrod who received a phone call from someone posing as a bank customer care executive.

The caller informed the victim that his credit card would become inactive unless an urgent Know Your Customer (KYC) verification was completed.

During the conversation, the fraudster allegedly obtained confidential banking credentials and security authentication details. Shortly afterwards, unauthorized online purchases amounting to ₹95,000 were carried out using the victim's financial information.

Cyber Police Tracking Digital Money Trail

Following the complaints, the Bhopal Cyber Crime Branch registered separate FIRs and initiated technical investigations into each case.

Investigators are examining banking transactions, mobile communication records, IP addresses, telecom data and digital wallets to identify the fraudsters responsible.

Officials believe the stolen funds were quickly distributed across multiple bank accounts and digital wallets located in different states, making recovery more complex.

Law enforcement agencies are coordinating with banks and telecom service providers to trace the origin of the fraudulent communications and freeze recipient accounts wherever possible.

Police Advise Public to Verify Before Acting

Cybercrime officials have urged citizens to remain cautious of unsolicited calls, text messages and online advertisements demanding immediate action.

Authorities emphasised that electricity departments, banks and government agencies never ask customers to share OTPs, banking credentials or transfer money through links received over phone calls or messaging platforms.

Similarly, job seekers are advised to thoroughly verify online employment platforms before making any financial investment or cryptocurrency payment.

Citizens encountering suspicious communications should immediately disconnect the call, independently verify the information through official channels and report cyber fraud by contacting the National Cyber Crime Helpline on 1930.
