Mines Ministry Launches Ninth Auction Round, Offering 20 Critical Mineral Blocks Across India

November 6, 2026

India has launched the ninth tranche of critical and strategic mineral block auctions, offering 20 mineral blocks as part of its efforts to strengthen domestic mineral exploration, improve resource availability and reduce dependence on external sources for strategically important raw materials.

The Ministry of Mines announced the latest auction round on Thursday, November 5, 2026. Alongside the mineral block auctions, the ministry also launched the third tranche of exploration licence auctions, covering an additional 11 blocks.

The latest initiative represents another step in India's broader strategy to develop its domestic mineral sector and secure resources that are increasingly important for manufacturing, infrastructure, energy technologies and advanced industries.

Ninth Auction Tranche Includes 20 Critical Mineral Blocks

The ninth tranche features deposits containing several critical and strategic minerals, including:

  • Graphite

  • Glauconite

  • Vanadium

  • Gallium

  • Titanium

  • Rare Earth Elements (REE)

  • Tungsten

  • Potash

  • Halite

These minerals have applications across multiple industrial sectors. Their importance is growing as countries seek reliable supplies of materials required for advanced manufacturing, electronics, energy infrastructure and emerging technologies.

Graphite, for example, is an important material used in battery manufacturing. Rare earth elements have applications in permanent magnets, electronics and several advanced industrial technologies. Gallium is used in specialised semiconductor applications, while tungsten is valued for its industrial properties.

The inclusion of these resources in the latest auction round reflects the importance of identifying and developing mineral deposits within India.

Previous Auction Rounds Show Progress

The latest auction follows eight earlier tranches of critical and strategic mineral block auctions.

According to the Ministry of Mines figures cited in the report, a total of 100 unique critical and strategic mineral blocks had been offered across the first eight tranches. Of these, 64 blocks had been successfully auctioned.

This indicates progress in the government's efforts to bring more strategically important mineral resources into the development and exploration pipeline.

However, successfully auctioning a mineral block is only one stage of the process. Further exploration, regulatory clearances, infrastructure development and mining operations are necessary before the resources can contribute meaningfully to domestic production.

Third Exploration Licence Auction Covers 11 Blocks

Alongside the ninth mineral block auction, the ministry has launched the third tranche of exploration licence auctions covering 11 blocks.

Exploration licences are important because they support the identification and assessment of mineral deposits. Detailed exploration can help determine the quantity, quality and commercial viability of resources before decisions are taken regarding further development.

For critical minerals, exploration plays a particularly important role because the availability of commercially viable deposits is essential to building a dependable domestic supply chain.

The parallel launch of the exploration licence auction and mineral block auction therefore reflects two connected priorities: identifying new mineral resources and advancing the development of known deposits.

Why Critical Minerals Matter to India's Economy

Critical minerals have become increasingly important to industrial development and economic security. They are used in sectors such as electric mobility, renewable energy, electronics, telecommunications, defence-related manufacturing and advanced industrial equipment.

India's ability to access these resources can influence the competitiveness of its manufacturing sector and the development of domestic supply chains.

For example, graphite and certain rare earth elements are important for battery and energy-related technologies. Gallium has specialised uses in semiconductor manufacturing, while titanium and tungsten serve important industrial applications.

A stronger domestic mineral ecosystem could help reduce supply-chain vulnerabilities and provide manufacturers with more dependable access to essential raw materials.

Challenges Beyond the Auction Process

Although the latest auction round represents progress, developing a competitive domestic critical mineral industry involves several challenges.

Mineral exploration can require significant investment, advanced geological technology and considerable time. Some deposits may also require complex extraction and processing methods before they become commercially viable.

Environmental clearances, land availability, transportation infrastructure and access to specialised processing facilities can further influence project timelines and costs.

India will also need to develop capabilities beyond extraction. Processing, refining and mineral recycling are important components of a complete critical mineral supply chain.

For companies entering resource-intensive sectors, careful financial planning, investment assessment and long-term business decisions are essential. Shunyatax's strategic advisory services provide a relevant reference for organisations evaluating business strategy and financial planning.

Strengthening India's Long-Term Mineral Security

The ninth tranche of mineral block auctions and the third exploration licence tranche demonstrate the government's continued focus on expanding India's critical mineral resource base.

With 20 mineral blocks offered in the latest round and 11 additional blocks included in the exploration licence auction, the initiative could create further opportunities for exploration companies and investors.

The earlier record of 64 successfully auctioned blocks out of 100 offered across eight tranches provides an indication of the progress made so far.

Ultimately, the impact of these auctions will depend on how efficiently awarded blocks move through exploration, clearances, investment and production. Building domestic capabilities in processing and refining will also be important if India aims to establish a more resilient and competitive critical mineral supply chain.
