The tax department of Uttar Pradesh (UP) reported a major enforcement success in the fiscal year 2024-25, recovering a total of ₹4,029.73 crore through combined efforts of mobile squads and the State’s Special Investigation Branch (SIB).
How the Recovery Was Achieved
According to the department’s annual report, UP deployed 148 mobile squads across all 20 zones, which conducted checks on over 43,377 vehicles. The authorities targeted irregularities ranging from incomplete documentation to suspicious cargo — leading to proceedings that resulted in substantial tax and penalty recovery.
In addition to physical checks, the SIB carried out special investigations into VAT/GST violations, e-way bill manipulation and other compliance failures. These investigations uncovered significant tax evasion, leading to enforced collections amounting to several hundreds of crores.
Context: Overall Tax Collections & Growth
For the year 2024-25, Uttar Pradesh’s total state tax revenue collection crossed ₹1,14,637.54 crore — marking a year-on-year increase of 3.89%. The enforcement-led recovery thus forms a critical part of ensuring compliance and plugging leakage in state revenue.
What This Means for Tax Governance
- The aggressive use of mobile squads and SIB investigations underlines UP’s focus on curbing tax evasion and ensuring compliance across sectors.
- Recovered funds add to the state’s fiscal health — enabling better public spending, infrastructure investments, and social welfare programmes.
- For businesses: reinforces the importance of proper documentation, GST/VAT compliance and transparent invoicing to avoid penalties.
- Signals to taxpayers — evasion has costs; the state is capable of rigorous enforcement even across wide geographies and industries.
