AP Liquor Scam: Middleman Reveals ₹78 Crore Laundering Network

A major breakthrough has emerged in the ongoing liquor-scam probe in Andhra Pradesh, as key accused Anil Chokhara has reportedly confessed to orchestrating a complex money-laundering operation — moving roughly ₹78 crore through a web of shell companies and bullion-linked transactions. Investigators say his confession reveals a “Kubera-style” mechanism to convert white money into unaccounted cash and gold.

How the Laundering Operated

According to interrogation details, Chokhara used the identities of vulnerable individuals to open shell companies and bank accounts. The liquor-syndicate — allegedly involving distilleries such as Adan Distilleries, Leela Distilleries and SPY Agro Industries — routed illicit payments, originally destined for the state beverages corporation, into these shell accounts based in Mumbai. From there, funds were reportedly converted into cash or gold via a bullion-dealer network.

The shell firms named by the SIT include Oluwik Multiventures Pvt Ltd, Kripati Enterprises Pvt Ltd, Nysna Solutions Pvt Ltd and Vishal Traders Pvt Ltd. These companies reportedly moved funds first from distilleries, then to bullion-linked entities, and finally into unaccounted assets.

Broader Implications & Ongoing Investigation

The disclosures by Chokhara have expanded the scope of the investigation significantly. The probe is now tracing whether the laundered money was used to pay kickbacks — possibly to influential persons or officials. The involvement of a bullion-trader whose family allegedly has financial links abroad has raised red flags about possible offshore fund transfers as well.

State authorities have already initiated moves to attach properties worth over ₹63.72 crore, believed to be acquired through illicit proceeds linked to the scam.

Why This Matters

  • The revelations shed light on how shell-company networks and bullion markets are being used to launder huge sums under the guise of legitimate business.
  • The case underscores systemic vulnerabilities in liquor distribution, regulation and enforcement when financial oversight is weak.
  • Authorities now face pressure to follow money trails thoroughly — including possible cross-border links, cash-to-gold conversions, and real-estate acquisitions tied to the scam.
