Aadhaar updates go mobile as UIDAI readies new app for address and number changes
New Delhi: Updating Aadhaar details is set to become significantly easier as the Unique Identification Authority of India prepares to launch a new Aadhaar mobile application later this month. The app will allow users to update key personal details - including address, mobile number, name and email ID - directly from their smartphones, removing the need for physical visits to Aadhaar service centres.
UIDAI officials said the nationwide rollout is expected between January 27 and January 30, following the successful completion of a trial phase. The app has already recorded strong early adoption, with millions of downloads across Android and iOS platforms.

Why the new app was introduced
Until now, Aadhaar holders were required to visit enrolment centres for most updates, particularly mobile number changes. This often led to long queues and delays, even for minor corrections.
UIDAI’s internal assessment found that a large proportion of centre visits were driven solely by mobile number updates. In many cases, Aadhaar enrolment had been completed years ago using a family member’s phone number, which later became inactive or inaccessible. This caused repeated disruptions in OTP-based services linked to banking, subsidies and government portals.
The new app is intended to address these issues through a mobile-first approach.
Mobile number updates without centre visits
The most significant feature of the app is the ability to update a registered mobile number remotely. Users will be able to complete the process using face authentication, with a service fee of ₹75 payable digitally via UPI within the app.
UIDAI officials said facial authentication technology has reached a level of maturity that allows secure verification without compromising privacy. Given the sensitivity of Aadhaar-linked mobile numbers, additional safeguards have been built into the process.
Key features offered in the app
The application enables Aadhaar holders to:
-
Update address, name and email ID digitally
-
Change the registered mobile number using face authentication
-
Generate a digital Aadhaar contact card
-
Share limited identity details through QR codes
-
Scan QR codes to securely exchange name and mobile number
Officials said more services, including expanded correction options, will be added in subsequent updates.
Aadhaar’s role in India’s digital ecosystem

Aadhaar has become the foundational identity layer for banking, telecom services, welfare schemes, pensions and subsidies. By moving core update services to mobile platforms, UIDAI aims to reduce dependency on physical infrastructure while improving accessibility and efficiency.
Authorities stressed that data protection and privacy standards have been central to the app’s design. All updates are processed through secure channels, with authentication controls aligned to existing regulatory frameworks.
Implications for verification and compliance
As Aadhaar data underpins financial onboarding and service delivery, accurate and up-to-date records are critical. Simplifying updates helps reduce mismatches and authentication failures, strengthening downstream verification processes.
Such reliability is essential for institutions that depend on identity validation and compliance checks - areas closely linked to robust auditing services in india UIDAI officials said the new app marks a step forward in making Aadhaar services faster, more reliable and fully digital, while reinforcing trust in India’s digital identity infrastructure.
