Jaunpur Fake Birth Certificate Racket Busted - 500+ Forged IDs, 8 Arrested

Jaunpur Fake Birth Certificate Racket Busted

Jaunpur (Uttar Pradesh): Police in Jaunpur have cracked down on a sophisticated interstate gang allegedly involved in forging birth certificates and other identity documents — seizing over 500 fake certificates and arresting eight individuals.

How the Gang Operated

The accused reportedly misused login credentials of real Panchayat officials — obtained or hacked — to access the government’s civil-registration portal. They used these credentials via remote-access tools (like AnyDesk) to generate “legitimate-looking” birth certificates, which were then sold to clients for between ₹600 and ₹1,000 each.

Inter-State Reach, Fake IDs for Multiple States

The racket allegedly had a pan-India footprint — issuing forged certificates with birthplaces across states including Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and West Bengal. Some fake certificates belonged to persons from West Bengal but showed origin in a Maharashtra Panchayat.

Arrests & Evidence Seized

Police investigations led to the arrest of eight accused, including a man identified as the gang leader Abhishek Gupta from Lucknow. Others included alleged conspirators from different districts. Authorities recovered hundreds of forged birth certificates, 9 Android mobiles, 4 laptops, as well as Panchayat-login credentials and passwords from them.

Implications & Why It Matters

This case highlights the magnitude and sophistication of identity-fraud networks in India. Fake birth certificates can be used to obtain other official documents like Aadhaar, PAN, and voter IDs — posing serious risks to governance, security, and citizen rights. The misuse of genuine officials’ login credentials underscores vulnerabilities in civil-registration systems.

What’s Next — Cancellations & Vigilance

Authorities have already begun the process of cancelling the fake certificates and notifying the relevant Panchayat offices. They have also opened probes into the extent of the racket and possible involvement of government staff. Citizens are urged to verify any newly issued certificate through official channels before relying on it.
