Gorakhpur Police Arrest Fake IAS Officer Gaurav Kumar in Multi-State Job Scam

Fake IAS Officer Held in Multi-State Job Scam

Gorakhpur’s Gulriha police have arrested Gaurav Kumar, a man who had been impersonating an IAS officer to cheat people by promising government jobs and big departmental contracts.

The accused had been on the run for months and had targeted victims across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and several other states, using a polished persona to deceive aspirants seeking employment.

The case first surfaced when trader Mukund Madhav from Mokama, Bihar, was detained at Gorakhpur railway station with ₹99.09 lakh in cash.

During routine checking conducted due to the Bihar Assembly elections, he revealed that the money had been given to Gaurav as a bribe for securing a government job and contract.

After being threatened with a complaint, Gaurav allegedly returned the money, which the trader was carrying back home when GRP officials intercepted him. This disclosure brought the fraud network into focus and prompted an intensified police search.

As pressure increased, Gaurav fled from his Lucknow hideout in Ashiyana before officers reached the location. A team searched the area but narrowly missed him again. Eventually, when he returned to Gorakhpur to meet an associate, police acted on a tip-off and arrested him. Officials confirmed that cheating cases against him are registered in multiple districts.

Investigators discovered that Gaurav had crafted a false persona of a 2022-batch IAS officer on social media. His posts, jargon, and claims about government schemes made his identity appear genuine.

He was supported by at least three associates who handled his social media profiles, produced forged documents and maintained the illusion of an official career. These elements helped him earn trust quickly and exploit people financially.

The deception extended beyond job fraud. On November 11, a woman approached the police claiming that Gaurav had proposed marriage while posing as an IAS officer.

She said he narrated stories about meetings, projects and bureaucratic duties to appear credible. Over time, he allegedly sought money under different pretexts and then disappeared, revealing a pattern of emotional exploitation tied to financial fraud.

Police learned that Gaurav had been active in Gorakhpur for almost six months. He had rented a house near BRD Medical College, but it was found locked during searches. Officers believe more victims may come forward as the interrogation continues.

The arrest has again highlighted how fraudsters exploit desperation for jobs and trust in government officials, stressing the need for stronger verification practices and transparent compliance systems, supported by reliable auditing services in india
