Army Jawan Honeytrapped on Telegram, Held Hostage and Forced to Transfer Lakhs
Lucknow: In a disturbing case of digital exploitation, an Indian Army soldier posted at the 509th Armed Base Workshop in Agra was allegedly trapped through a Telegram honeytrap, taken hostage and extorted of ₹8.69 lakh. The accused gang reportedly assaulted him, recorded an explicit video under threat at gunpoint and later attempted to extract an additional ₹40 lakh by blackmailing him with the footage.
Police have now engaged the Cyber Crime Cell, bank fraud monitoring teams and social media surveillance units to trace the network behind the crime.
Telegram Contact Turns Deadly as Soldier Walks Into a Trap
According to investigators, the soldier came in contact with a woman on Telegram several weeks ago. Their chats became personal, and she invited him to meet in Agra.
When he arrived, the woman and her accomplices took him to a secluded room where he was beaten, restrained and forced to transfer ₹8.69 lakh to secure his release.
Accused Demanded Another ₹40 Lakh, Threatened to Leak Video
Days after the initial extortion, the gang contacted him again, threatening to circulate the explicit video on social media if he did not pay an additional ₹40 lakh.
Unable to bear the pressure, the soldier filed a formal police complaint, leading to the registration of an FIR.
Explicit Video Recorded Under Gunpoint
The victim told police that the gang staged and recorded the video while holding a pistol to his head. Investigators suspect the group is part of a larger network targeting defence personnel, bank staff and government employees through fake online identities.
Digital forensics teams are now tracing device logs, bank transfers and IP routes linked to the suspects.
Forced Confession Used as Blackmail Material
Before letting him go, the accused allegedly compelled the soldier to write a fabricated confession claiming he had met a “17-year-old girl” multiple times and intended to marry her.
Police say the false statement was created to blackmail him again if he attempted legal action.
The FIR includes charges relating to extortion, criminal intimidation and cyber fraud. Investigators are now tracking beneficiaries of the transferred funds.
Personal Items Stolen as Accused Fled
The gang also took the soldier’s phone, wallet and identity documents before escaping. Police have traced the last active location of the stolen phone and are conducting raids in Agra and nearby districts.
Cyber Cell Expands Probe Across Multiple States
Officers leading the investigation said teams are actively pursuing both digital and on-ground clues. Preliminary findings indicate that the network may be operating across several states, using Telegram, WhatsApp and Instagram to target specific individuals in uniformed services and government institutions.
Incidents like this underline how rapidly digital threats are evolving and why organisations today must maintain strong internal systems, clear documentation and secure operational practices.
